Race Equality Policy

"Stockingford Junior School will not tolerate racial harassment of any kind.
We are committed to combating racial discrimination and promoting racial equality."

This policy was formulated by a working party consisting of the Head Teacher, Chair of Governors, Curriculum Committee and staff representatives.

Stockingford Junior School recognises the wide range of abilities, background and life experiences of our students.  We see this as positive, enriching and supportive of social, moral, cultural and spiritual developments in school.  We are committed to providing appropriate opportunities and support, so that all involved benefit fully from the curriculum and the life of the school and have equal opportunity to succeed.

We will: "ensure equality of opportunity and treatment in the delivery of services and in its employment policies to all people irrespective of race, colour, ethnic or national origin, religion, creed, age, sex, marital status, disability and sexual orientation."  These principles are reinforced in the school’s Mission Statement.

 We recognise that:

The definition of institutional racism is “the collective failure of an organization to provide an appropriate and professional service to people because of their culture, colour or ethnic origin.  It can be seen or detected in processes, attitudes and behaviour which amount to discrimination through unwitting prejudice, ignorance, thoughtless and racist stereotyping which disadvantages minority ethnic people.”

A racist incident is “ any incident which is perceived to be racist by the victim or any other person.”

Full details on definitions are available at www.cre.gov.uk.

Actions To Ensure Race Equality

  1. We shall undertake a race equality audit using the CRE’s Learning for All: Standards for Racial Equality in School.  From this we will:

  • Set race equality targets.

  • Write an action plan to ensure targets are met.

  • Make the policy and targets known to all teaching and ancillary staff, pupils & parents.

  • Monitor pupils by ethnic group*

  1. The Race Equality Policy will be reviewed annually by the Head Teacher & Governing Body.  A report on racial equality performance and issues will be part of the annual report to parents.

  2. The school will continue, through the Governing body, to monitor and further develop practice.

  3. Race Equality guidance will be part of the induction for new staff and an aspect of CPD for all staff. All adults are expected to be aware of, and sensitive to, students who have experienced racial abuse.  A designated teacher will counsel victims and maintain records.

  4. We will adhere to relevant County Council Racial Harassment Guidelines.

  5. The school will endeavour to ensure that we reflect the local community needs through its community governors, parent consultation and forums, eg. BACKCHAT.

  6. The school will maintain a working relationship with NCC, Education Services and the EMTAG officer (Ethnic Minority & Travellers Achievement Grant).
