First Aid Policy

All staff, both teaching and non-teaching are responsible for dealing with minor incidents requiring first aid.

During lesson time minor first aid is administered by the class teacher or teaching assistant.  In the event of a more serious accident, help should be obtained from Reception.  At lunchtimes, midday supervisors administer first aid.

If there are any concerns qualified first aiders should be consulted.  They are:

  • Kyley Hicks

  • Liz Chapman

  • Moira Leedham

  • Midday supervisors

Safety/HIV Protection

Always wear disposable gloves when treating accidents/incidents that involve body fluids. Make sure any waste (wipes, pads, paper towels etc) are placed in a disposable bag, tied securely and disposed of in an appropriate bin.  Children’s clothes should be place in a plastic bag  and fastened securely to be taken home.

Recording Accidents

Accidents fall into 4 main categories

  1. Fatal

  2. Major injury

  3. To employees resulting in more than 3 consecutive days absence

  4. Other accidents

Accidents in categories 1 and 2 should be recorded in the book kept in the admin office and the LEA telephoned immediately followed with a copy of the accident report.

A major injury includes: fracture of any bone in the arm or leg except wrist, hand, ankle or foot; amputation of a limb; loss of sight of an eye; any other injury which results in the person being admitted to hospital for more than 24 hours (other than for observation)

If an ambulance is required send a message to Reception.  They will also contact parents.

Other minor accidents should be recorded on the Internal Accident Forms available from the office.  This should be done by the member of staff who immediately dealt with the incident.  All children with bumped heads will be given a letter to take home to parents.

Employee Accidents

(This applies to all WCC employees and self-employed persons on school premises)

Any accident sustained by an employee resulting in fatal or major injury must be reported to the HSE immediately by telephone and details confirmed within 7 days. Non fatal/major but resulting in employee being incapacitated for more than 3 days do not require a telephone call but the 7 day rule applies.

The accident reporting policy applies to injuries incurred on school sponsored/controlled activities off the school site if the accident arose out of or in connection with the activities
